A Concord police cruiser responding to an emergency call was struck by a transit bus on Laws Brook Road on Monday, Aug. 17, scattering debris and briefly closing the road. No one was injured.

The collision happened near the intersection with Conant Street early Monday afternoon, according to Concord Police Capt. Brian Goldman. He told The Concord Bridge the cruiser was traveling westbound with its lights and sirens activated when the driver of a Lowell Regional Transit Authority "Road Runner" bus, heading the same direction, attempted to turn onto Conant Street without yielding.

The impact left the cruiser on the side of the road and damaged the LRTA bus. Tow trucks hauled both vehicles away, and Laws Brook Road reopened around 1:20 p.m.

Goldman said the crash remained under investigation but that he expects the bus driver to face a citation and civil charges.

"Cruisers can be fixed," Goldman said.

Kay Aoki, an Acton resident and the only passenger aboard the bus, said she was on her phone at the time and initially "didn't know what happened." Aoki was riding from her home in Acton to the Acton Senior Center aboard the Road Runner, the LRTA's door-to-door senior transportation service that operates Monday through Friday between roughly 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. She waited at the scene with the bus driver until a replacement bus arrived to continue the route.

The LRTA does not currently serve Concord, which makes the bus's presence on Laws Brook Road unusual. Town officials have weighed joining the transit authority in recent months. The town announced on Instagram on July 6 that the LRTA would present expansion plans to Concord's Transportation Advisory Committee on July 7 at 141 Keyes Road.

The outcome of that presentation has not been publicly confirmed.

LRTA officials did not immediately respond to questions from The Concord Bridge about Monday's crash.
