Lexington riders can catch the Lexpress bus to Wegmans in Burlington and transfer to MBTA service at Arlington Heights after the town's biggest route overhaul in five years took effect Monday, July 6, 2026.

The Select Board voted 5-0 on Friday, May 22, to approve the changes, which reshape Route C and expand Route B while leaving Route A's path untouched. Mel Novner, Transportation Services Department assistant, told the board at its May 4 meeting that the goals were to serve more riders, improve connectivity to the MBTA, and pull buses off congested streets where few people were boarding.

"Route C currently has the lowest ridership and will have the largest changes in order to engage more riders," Novner said.

Route B: New Burlington stops, no cuts

Route B runs to the Third Avenue/Wegmans area in Burlington once per hour, on the hour. The bus also travels both directions on Old Concord Road, reaching H Mart twice per hour: approximately 43 minutes after the hour (after Market Basket) and approximately 6 minutes after the hour before looping back to Depot Square via Middlesex Turnpike.

Route C: Biggest shake-up

Service returns to Lillian Road and Bow Street. Once per hour, Route C heads to Arlington Heights, stopping across from the Arlington Heights busway, then returns to Lexington via Paul Revere Road and Massachusetts Avenue. That busway connection lets riders transfer to MBTA buses bound for Alewife and Harvard Square.

Mason Street picks up new service, and buses run both directions on Baker Avenue and Taft Avenue.

Three segments lose Lexpress coverage: Lowell Street between Lillian Road and Massachusetts Avenue; Massachusetts Avenue between Pleasant Street and Bow Street (still served by MBTA Route 62); and Pleasant Street between Mason Street and Massachusetts Avenue.

Route A: Minor timing shift

Route A keeps its existing path. The bus passes Crafty Yankee at 57 minutes after the hour and leaves Avalon Lexington Hills at 9 minutes after the hour, running 2 to 4 minutes earlier than the previous schedule starting at John Benson Road.

How it works

All three routes depart Depot Square at the same time, 30 minutes after the hour. Lexpress runs Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Riders may board or exit anywhere along the route, not only at listed time points, and should arrive at their stop five minutes early since buses may run ahead of schedule.

The changes mark the first major Lexpress restructuring since 2021. The service launched in 1979 as a cost-sharing partnership between the town and the MBTA and operates under a three-year contract with two optional renewal years.
