A flood watch remains in effect for Lexington and Concord through Tuesday morning as a three-day nor'easter weakens across eastern Massachusetts.

The National Weather Service (NWS) extended the watch Monday, Sept. 28, warning that saturated ground could still produce flooding and downed trees even as the heaviest rain tapers off. A rain gauge in Lexington recorded 1.60 inches by 7:14 a.m. Monday, according to the NWS Boston public information statement. A second observer one mile north-northwest of Lexington logged 1.46 inches.

Nearby towns saw higher totals. Waltham recorded 3.53 inches, Belmont 2.27 inches, Winchester 2.03 inches and Acton 1.88 inches, all from the same NWS report. Southeastern Massachusetts bore the brunt, with some areas topping 7 inches.

Across the region, the NWS tallied more than 170 reports of trees toppled by wind and rain on Saturday, Sept. 26, and Sunday, Sept. 27, as Patch first reported. Power outages across Massachusetts peaked at more than 43,000 on Saturday night, according to WBUR citing PowerOutage.us. By Monday morning, roughly 1,600 customers remained without power statewide.

No Lexington- or Concord-specific outage counts or road closures had been published as of Monday afternoon.

NWS Boston meteorologist Francis Tarasiewicz warned Saturday evening against complacency inland. "You might go to bed with power and wake up without power," Tarasiewicz told the Boston Herald. He cautioned that residents further from the coast may have been downplaying the storm's threat.

AccuWeather meteorologist Chad Merrill told the Herald on Saturday that leaves still on the trees made branches more vulnerable to persistent wind and rain-loosened soil.

Wind advisories have been canceled. Gusts of 20 to 30 mph were still possible Monday, but the NWS forecast the Boston area to be dry by about 6 a.m. Tuesday. Sunshine is expected to return Wednesday, with temperatures climbing to near 77 degrees Thursday.

Residents who lose power can report outages to Eversource by texting "OUT" to 23129 and check status by texting "STAT" to the same number.
