Concord seniors can learn how to spot fire hazards in their homes and prepare for emergencies at a free session led by Concord Fire Department safety coordinator Chuck Hopkins on Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 1 p.m. at the Harvey Wheeler Community Center, 1276 Main St.

The "Home Fire Safety" talk is the second and final installment of a two-part senior safety series the department launched on July 28 with a session called "Steps to Safety," which focused on reducing fall and fire risks using a curriculum developed by the National Fire Protection Association.

The Aug. 11 session shifts to fire prevention specifically. According to the department's program listing, the talk will cover how to identify safety concerns room by room, how to prepare for an emergency and what older adults can do to reduce fire risk before a problem starts.

The NFPA reports that adults 65 and older are twice as likely to be killed or injured by fires compared to the general population.

Hopkins joined the Concord Fire Department in 2014 and now serves as its safety coordinator. He has been part of a broader department effort to protect older residents. In March, the department and the Concord Housing Authority secured grant funding to install sprinkler systems at Everett Gardens, improving safety for more than 50 low-income elderly and disabled residents there.
