Concord will close southbound Sudbury Road to through traffic starting Friday, Sept. 11. The town's contractor will resume pavement milling and utility work on the stretch between Garfield Road and Fitchburg Turnpike (Route 117).
A second project on Fitchburg Turnpike, stretching from the Sudbury town line to the Lincoln town line, is set to start Wednesday, Sept. 16, according to a traffic advisory the town posted Sept. 9. Both jobs are part of Concord's ongoing 2026 road reconstruction program, which has already included work on Old Bedford Road, Bedford Street and Maple Street.
Work crews will be on site from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both roads. Police officers or flaggers will direct traffic.
The schedules are weather-dependent.
Detour routes
On Sudbury Road, only southbound traffic will be detoured. Drivers heading south will be routed down Garfield Road to Fitchburg Turnpike. Northbound traffic can pass through the work zone.
On Fitchburg Turnpike, eastbound traffic will be detoured starting in Sudbury, down Pantry Road to Concord Road/Sudbury Road and back to Route 117. Westbound traffic can pass through.
What to expect at home
Residents along both corridors should be able to reach their driveways during most of the work. Short delays are possible when equipment is operating directly in front of a property. During final paving, driveways may be blocked for roughly 30 minutes while hot asphalt cools.
The town also asked drivers not to park within the work limits during construction.
The advisory warned that irrigation systems, underground dog fences, landscaping or other private improvements within the public right-of-way could be damaged during construction. Neither the town nor its contractor will cover that damage. Concord Public Works encouraged residents to relocate irrigation lines, dog fences and plantings away from the road edge where possible.
No completion date has been announced for either project. The work will proceed in three phases: milling the existing pavement, adjusting drainage and utility structures, and final paving.
