Concord-Carlisle swept the top spot in the first MIAA Division 1 soccer power rankings of the fall season, with both the boys and girls programs ranked No. 1.
The MIAA released the rankings on Tuesday, Sept. 29, based on results entered by member schools. The Patriots carry a combined 11-0-1 record. Both programs reached the state semifinals last fall.
The girls team (6-0) holds the top spot ahead of state finalist Franklin (6-1), according to MassLive's analysis of the rankings. Reigning Division 1 champion Natick (2-2) sits 21st.
Midfielder Emmy O'Donnell, a Duke commit, has been a driving force. She scored twice in the season-opening 3-1 win over Algonquin Regional on Sept. 8, then added a goal and an assist in a 4-0 shutout of Lincoln-Sudbury on Sept. 10, according to the Concord Bridge. Goalkeeper Aubrey Monaghan stopped a penalty kick in the opener and kept a clean sheet against Lincoln-Sudbury. O'Donnell also buried a 25-yard free kick against Wellesley to extend a lead.
The boys team (5-0-1) edged BC High by 0.1 points for the No. 1 ranking, per MassLive. Both teams entered with identical 5-0-1 records, but the Patriots earned the edge through a tougher schedule. The Dual County League placed three teams in the top six: Concord-Carlisle at No. 1, Newton South at No. 3 and Lincoln-Sudbury at No. 6.
Co-captain Max Hepworth has powered the attack. He scored in four consecutive games through Sept. 18, including both goals in a 2-1 win at Lincoln-Sudbury, according to the Concord Bridge. The boys routed Framingham 4-0 on Sept. 10, beat Bedford 2-0 on Sept. 14 and drew Cambridge Rindge & Latin 1-1 on Sept. 16 before the Lincoln-Sudbury win. The Patriots picked up at least one additional victory between Sept. 18 and the Sept. 29 rankings release to reach 5-0-1.
Last fall, both programs made the Division 1 Final Four. The girls beat Bishop Feehan 1-0 to reach the semifinals. The boys fell to St. John's Prep 4-2 in their semifinal, with Hepworth scoring the final Concord-Carlisle goal.
The MIAA updates power rankings each Tuesday and Friday through the regular season. The top 32 teams in each division qualify for the tournament.
