Lexington made OnlyInYourState.com's list of the 10 best U.S. towns for young families, a nod to the schools, historic downtown, and trail network that have earned the town repeated recognition despite its high cost of living.

The lifestyle site praised Lexington's public schools, its "charming, historic downtown," proximity to Boston, and the 10-mile Minuteman Bikeway running through Lexington Center. It also flagged the town's steep price tag for housing.

That price tag is concrete. Lexington's median home price hit $1.8 million in the three months ending May 2026, up 8.4% year over year, according to Redfin. Half of single-family homes sold above asking in spring 2026, with a sale-to-list ratio of 102.33%, according to Steinmetz Real Estate Pros. Homes moved in roughly 20 days. Massachusetts as a whole earned an "F" for housing affordability in Realtor.com's 2026 Housing Report Card.

The ranking lands in a town already working to turn visitor attention into business. In a January 2026 interview with the Lexington Observer, Economic Development Director Sandhya Iyer said almost 120,000 visitors passed through the Lexington Visitors Center in 2025, excluding museum visits, Battle Green foot traffic, and tour bus arrivals.

"Tourism also really brings in the small businesses, the foot traffic, the events," Iyer said.

Iyer outlined 2026 priorities that include reducing the Center vacancy rate through public art and community events, filling empty storefronts along Massachusetts Avenue, and evaluating whether to shift tourism operations to a destination marketing organization. The town is also partnering with the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism and Meet Boston to attract visitors arriving for FIFA World Cup games in Massachusetts and Sail Boston in July 2026.

The Lexington Chamber of Commerce's summer programming includes a weekly concert series at Emery Park running Fridays through August 21, 2026, and its 33rd annual Arts & Crafts Fair on Saturday, September 12.

Lexington Public Schools average 9 out of 10 on GreatSchools, a rating that drives buyer demand and keeps the town's population of roughly 34,000 skewing toward families willing to compete for limited housing stock. Inventory sat at about two months of supply in spring 2026.
