Dr. Norman S. Weinberg spent nearly five decades building the kind of medical practice patients don't forget. He died July 4 at age 80, leaving behind generations of Lexington families who trusted him with their care.
Weinberg moved to Concord with his wife and daughter in 1979 and opened a solo practice in Lexington that he ran for 47 years, affiliated with Emerson Hospital. His patients said as much about him as any resume could. One called him "the best diagnostician this side of the moon," praising how he followed up diligently and "never let a patient drift." Another simply stayed with him for 28 years. A third put it plainly: "I never feel rushed by him."
Weinberg co-founded the Emerson Hospital Physicians Organization and chaired the Patient Care Improvement Committee for Partners Community Healthcare, shaping how hospitals across the region measured and improved care. He also served as an expert reviewer for the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine and reviewed manuscripts for the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, and the International Journal for Quality in Health Care.
Born June 13, 1946, and raised in Miami, Weinberg earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Florida and his medical degree from Belgium's Université Libre de Bruxelles in 1976. Three years later, he arrived in Concord with a young family and a plan to practice medicine his own way — a plan that held for the next 47 years.
Weinberg loved jazz and Broadway show tunes, laughed at the Marx Brothers and Woody Allen, and pursued photography with the same quiet intensity he brought to his practice. Many of his own photographs lined the walls of his office, giving patients something to look at besides medical charts while they waited.
He is survived by his daughter, Keir Weinberg, and his former wife, Mari Weinberg. No formal services are planned. Arrangements are being handled by Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord, where friends and neighbors may share remembrances at DeeFuneralHome.com.
