Drivers, residents, and anyone with a driveway on Maple Street or Old Bedford Road should expect delays starting Wednesday, July 15, as Concord Public Works resurfaces both streets.
Crews began milling pavement on Maple Street on Wednesday, July 15, working the entire length of the street from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to a town civic alert published Saturday, July 12. Old Bedford Road milling is scheduled to begin Thursday, July 16, and continue Friday, July 17, according to the town's week overview. That project stretches from Lexington Road to the Bedford town line, a corridor connecting Concord Center to the Lexington and Bedford borders.
Both projects follow the same three-phase process: removal of existing asphalt, drainage and curb adjustments, and final paving. During that last phase, driveways and entrances may be blocked for roughly 30 minutes while hot asphalt is placed and allowed to cool.
Police details are managing traffic flow through the active work zones. Cars can pass through, but the town warned drivers to use caution around heavy equipment and to avoid parking within the roadway work limits.
Concord Public Works said in its July 12 alert that property access "will largely be maintained" but warned of short delays entering or exiting driveways while equipment passes directly in front of a property. Business owners or residents who need immediate access during construction should speak with the police detail officer or flagger on site.
The projects are part of a broader summer resurfacing program that has already included work on Stow Street, Everett Street, Devens Street, Thoreau Court, and the MBTA commuter rail parking lot. IMEG Consultants Corp. is managing the work on behalf of Concord Public Works' Engineering Division.
The town also cautioned that private irrigation systems, underground dog fences, or landscaping within the public right-of-way could be damaged during construction. Neither the town nor the contractor accepts responsibility for private improvements in the right-of-way.
All schedules are weather-dependent. Concord school buses will navigate the Old Bedford Road work zones as conditions allow. Ethan Holmes, the construction administration consultant overseeing the projects, can be reached at 603-602-1311 or [email protected] with scheduling questions.
