Jill Goldman-Callahan, a Concord abstract painter who makes pigments from walnut ink, crushed coffee beans and hammered desert stones, has two exhibitions on view across Lexington and Concord this summer.
Her solo show, "Chroma's Song," opens Wednesday, July 22, at Three Stones Gallery, 32 Main Street, Concord, and runs through Saturday, August 30. An opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, August 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. ArtScope Magazine featured Goldman-Callahan's work at Three Stones in a July review titled "Beyond the Verbal," written by John Belmont.
Goldman-Callahan and her son, photographer Roan Callahan, are also showing "Then and Now" at LexArt's Molly Harding Nye Gallery, 130 Waltham Street, Lexington. The mother-son collaboration pairs her abstract paintings with his photographs and runs through Saturday, August 2. Admission is free, Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Goldman-Callahan has lived in Concord for 30 years and works out of Studio 303 at the Umbrella Arts Center on Stow Street. She holds a master's degree in art therapy from Lesley University and taught art in Wellesley public schools for 21 years before turning to painting full time. She is one of more than 50 studio artists working at the Umbrella, according to the organization's website.
"My surfaces, spread like icing, or dripped across a tilted plane live at the intersection of intent and accident," Goldman-Callahan writes on her studio website. "I once worked as a pastry chef and love rich paint the consistency of buttercream."
Thomas Moore, bestselling author of "Care of the Soul," has described her work as "not a painting of, but a peek into."
Fellow Umbrella artists Sinéad Theresa Sinnott and Alice Rosa are also showing work in "Say It with Flowers" at Concord Art, 37 Lexington Road, through Tuesday, August 11.
