Concord-Carlisle's boys soccer team faces a DCL rival and a community tradition Saturday when Lincoln-Sudbury visits for the rescheduled Kicks for Cancer game.
The Patriots (12-3-1, 6-2-1 DCL) host the Warriors (6-3-4, 4-2-3 DCL) at 6 p.m. on Doug White Turf 1 at Concord-Carlisle High School, according to MaxPreps. A girls soccer game between the two schools opens the day at 3:30 p.m.
The matchup carries weight in the MIAA Division 1 power rankings. MassLive reported Oct. 20 that Concord-Carlisle sits atop Division 1, with Lincoln-Sudbury at No. 3. The Dual County League holds the top three spots in those rankings, with Cambridge Rindge & Latin at No. 2.
Lincoln-Sudbury has played the state's toughest schedule, posting a 2.987 opponent rating, according to MassLive.
Both teams enter Saturday off Oct. 20 losses. Concord-Carlisle fell to Wayland 2-1 at home. Lincoln-Sudbury lost 2-1 to Waltham the same day, according to MaxPreps.
The Patriots won the first meeting 2-1 on Sept. 18 at Lincoln-Sudbury. Senior forward Max Hepworth scored both goals in that game, according to the Concord Bridge. Hepworth has been the Patriots' top scorer all season. The Boston Globe profiled him Oct. 13, reporting he had 10 goals and six assists through 10 games at that point.
Coach Ray Pavlik told the Globe that Hepworth's finishing sets him apart. "His touch is outstanding," Pavlik said. "He's a great finisher."
Concord-Carlisle has outscored opponents 38-10 this season, while Lincoln-Sudbury carries a 22-15 goal differential, per MaxPreps.
Kicks for Cancer returns after postponement
Saturday's game doubles as the Lois Wells Memorial Kicks for Cancer event, originally postponed due to a storm, according to a Concord-Carlisle High School Facebook post. Athletic Director Aaron Joncas confirmed the Oct. 24 reschedule, the Concord Bridge reported.
The annual event honors Lois Wells, mother of Concord-Carlisle teacher and boys soccer assistant coach Steve Wells. Proceeds support women's cancer research, with a focus on early detection of ovarian cancer. The event started with one game in 2007 and has grown into a week of community involvement, according to the Kicks for Cancer website.
Saturday's boys game kicks off at 6 p.m. on Doug White Turf 1, with the girls match at 3:30 p.m.
